2009 looks set to be a good year for electro music, especially for new acts. If La Roux’s second single, In for the Kill, is anything to go by then the London-based electro duo’s debut album should be well worth a listen. It’s a fair bet that the album won’t feature a collaboration with Brighton indie rockers The Kooks, which is a damn shame, as the two bands sound great together.

There’s a timeless quality to Debbie Harry’s ethereal vocals on Blondie’s Heart of Glass, which makes it perfect for mashups. This track pairs it up with Portishead’s trip hop anthem Sour Times and adds in a dash of Kanye West’s ubiquitous Love Lockdown for a third shade of heartbreak.

The Reborn Identity - 3 Little Petals

To kickstart the next wave of The Reborn Identity, how about something a little different? In one corner we have the fresh sounds of electropop waif Frankmusik. In the other corner, the legendary Throwing Muses founder Kristin Hersh’s tsunami of sound, 50 Foot Wave. The end product is the most rocked out Reborn Identity mashup to date.

This track would not have been possible were it not for the generosity of Kristin Hersh, who has opened up the entire 50 Foot Wave back catalogue for free download under a Creative Commons license. The Reborn Identity ballad Crowded World, released just before Christmas, has been picking up steady interest over the past few months. The track received a “Song of the Week” accolade over at MashStix in February, and has now been featured on the latest Mash-Up Your Bootz Party Sampler (vol 21). After 18 months of producing mashups, I’ve notched up a fair stack of the blighters. About time for a retrospective then?

Identity Theft Vol. 1 brings together some of my favourite and most notable mashups so far, as well as a handful of previously unreleased and brand new tracks. Every track has been polished up and remastered to get them sounding their best.

With Valentine’s Day just around the corner, it seemed like the ideal time to unleash this hot and steamy little number that’s been languishing at the back of The Reborn Identity closet for far too long.

I’m determined to make 2009 a good year for The Reborn Identity, so I best not let a month slip by without a new track. How about this upbeat little number to kick things off, then? After listening to Ladyhawke’s album on loop for much of December, I couldn’t pass up the chance to mash up New Zealand’s best new export. I do hope I’ve done her justice. 

Ladykillers is one of five all-new tracks that will feature on Identity Theft Vol. 1 - a best of compilation set for release this February. Stay tuned over the next couple of weeks for more news.

If you’ve yet to check out the Sound Unsound Bhangra Bootay compilation then you’ll have missed this exclusive track from The Reborn Identity. The delicately spiced backing comes from a track called Pairon Mein Bandhan Hai (which I believe translates as “our feet are tied”) from the soundtrack to the Bollywood movie, Mohabbatein.
