RE:boots August - the best mashups of 2010

  RE:boots August

1. Phil RetroSpector - Chasing The Broken Hearted [MP3]
2. Apollo Zero - Calculating Occupants (Of Interplanetary Kraftwerk) [Official.fm
3. Go Home Productions - Smells Like Rockin’ Robin [MP3]
4. Go Home Productions - Downtown Octopus [MP3]
5. LeeDM101 - Roxanne’s Tainted Fly [Soundcloud]
6. The Kleptones - Shits and Giggles [Album]
7. ElectroSound - Eleanor’s Lazy Place [MP3]
8. Bynar - The Sudden End [MP3
9. Envision - Fly Me To The Club [MP3]
10. Frunt Room - Bloom [MP3]

1. Phil RetroSpector - Chasing The Broken Hearted [MP3]
- Snow Patrol - Chasing Cars
- Jimmy Ruffin - What Becomes of the Broken Hearted
Every once in a while a mashup comes along that ’s just flawless. With his latest melancholy melange, Phil RetroSpector has rustled up just such a track - the tone of the two songs complement each other perfectly and the production is smooth and professional. To top it off, Phil has even rustled up an unusual but perfectly poignant video

2. Apollo Zero - Calculating Occupants (Of Interplanetary Kraftwerk) [Official.fm
- The Carpenters - Calling Occupants of Interplanetary Craft
- The Young Punx - Calling Occupants of Interplanetary Craft (Openair Mix)
- Madonna - Ray of Light
- Kraftwerk - Pocket Calculator
- Glomag - Pocket Calculator
Apollo Zero takes us on a retro-futuristic journey with this fantastic mix of Karen Carpenter’s earnestness, Kraftwerk’s cold calculation and Madonna’s glossy pop. The end result is a charming piece of geeky electro fun.

3. Go Home Productions - Smells Like Rockin’ Robin [MP3]
- Nirvana - Smells Like Teen Spirit
- Michael Jackson - Rockin’ Robin
Just about every mashup producer has taken a chug of Teen Spirit over the years, but there’s always a little left in the bottle for the more ingenious mashers. GHP is nothing if not ingenious, and this new track from his Rockin’ in San Francisco EP shows he’s lost none of his irreverant charm.

4. Go Home Productions - Downtown Octopus [MP3]
- The Beatles - Octopus’s Garden
- Petula Clark - Downtown
While GHP’s Rockin’ Robin has been the talk of the Web these past few weeks, this alternative track from his recent EP is equally worth a listen. Deliciously retro yet totally fresh, it’s everything I love to hear in a mashup.

5. LeeDM101 - Roxanne’s Tainted Fly [Soundcloud]
- The Police - Roxanne
- Soft Cell - Tainted Love
- Mily Cyrus - Fly on the Wall (Jason Nevins Remix)
LeeDM101 can do no wrong in my eyes these days. Who else could take a Miley Cyrus track - Miley Cyrus, for god’s sake - and turn it into a hard-edged, quasi-industrial banger worthy of any dancefloor.

6. The Kleptones - Shits and Giggles [Album]
- 20-track Mashup album
The Kleptones safely secured their place in the top mashups albums of the year way back in January with the unparalleled Uptime/Downtime double feature. Two albums in one year wasn’t enough though, and they’re back again with this compilation of previously unreleased tracks. Despite being a grab-bag of mashups that didn’t fit on previous Kleptones albums, it’s still chock full of top tracks. The album closer, Unwanted Whisper (Bon Jovi vs George Michael) is particularly fine.

7. ElectroSound - Eleanor’s Lazy Place [MP3]
- The Beatles - Eleanor Rigby
- Caravan Palace - Lazy Place
With Eleanor’s Lazy Place, ElectroSound brings a boozy gypsy-jazz swing to the familiar Beatles track, recasting Eleanor Rigby as a lonely Parisienne widow.

8. Bynar - The Sudden End [MP3
- Placebo - The Bitter End
- Placebo - Julien
- BT - Suddenly (Ferry Corsten Mix)
Bynar takes us back into indie disco territory with this intense mix of angst and beats. Brian Molko’s pained vocals gel beautifully with the backing to create what could easily pass for a commercial remix.

9. Envision - Fly Me To The Club [MP3]
- Frank Sintra - Fly Me To The Moon
- Flo-Rida ft. David Guetta - Club Can’t Handle Me
The most unlikely pairing in this month’s round-up comes courtsey of Australian producer, Envision. The fusion of Frank Sinatra and Flo-Rida sounds like a match made in novelty nightmares but the elements come together remarkably well.

10. Frunt Room - Bloom [MP3]
If you haven’t yet tuned into the Frunt Room podcast then you’re missing out on the best thing happening on the mashup scene right now. The off-kilter audio soap opera intersperses the action with bite-sized bootlegs fusing together the most eclectic range of sources you’re likely to hear. This tasty morsel, for instance, weaves together Roy Budd, Elvis, Japan and the Milk Tray advert from the ’80s - what’s not to love about that?
