RE:boots May - The best mashups of 2009

Here’s what’s been frizzing through my mashup cortex this May.
1. Loo & Placido - Electronic Popstar Killers [ZIP]
2. World Famous Audio Hacker - If U Seek Lucretia [MP3]
3. Eddie Pedalo - Standing In The Way Of Apache [MP3]
4. Elconep - I Believe It’s Not Fair [MP3]
5. DJ Clive$ter - To Lose My Touch [MP3]
6. Mighty Mike - Fall Out Gloria [MP3]
7. CjR - Numb’s Diner [HTTP]
8. Norwegian Recycling - Viva La Viral [MP3]
9. G3RSt - Surfbusters [MP3]
10. Winkar Lopez - Just Silence Gone [HTTP]
1. Loo & Placido - Electronic Popstar Killers [ZIP]
- A two-hour party mix mashup set
In spite of the excellent quality of bootlegs out there this May, this latest mix set from mashup supremos Loo and Placido blows the competition out of the water. A thumping party of exclusive mashups, remixes and cut-ups, it seriously raises the bar.
2. World Famous Audio Hacker - If U Seek Lucretia [MP3]
- Britney - If U Seek Amy
- Sisters of Mercy - Lucretia, My Reflection
Part mashup, part remix, part cover, all gold. If U Seek Lucretia is a glimpse of what might be if Britney took a dark turn into gothsville. With all that emotional baggage to draw on - and a storming track like this as her template - she could do a hell of a lot worse.
3. Eddie Pedalo - Standing In The Way Of Apache [MP3]
- The Incredible Bongo Band - Apache
- The Gossip - Standing in the Way of Control
- Chic - Good Times
- The Sugarhill Gang - Rappers Delight
Some tracks click with me on first listen, whilst others sneak up on me after a couple of plays. This is definitely one of the latter, and it continues to get better and better with every listen. The diverse mix of sources have been worked together with consumate skill, creating something Eddie can be really proud of.
4. Elconep - I Believe It’s Not Fair [MP3]
- Lily Allen - Not Fair
- The Darkness - I Believe in a Thing Called Love
Originally snuck out a couple of months ago, I Believe It’s Not Fair was quickly bagged for the Foolklegs II compilation (itself well worth a listen). I can’t blame them either - this is a whole lot of fun, and somehow manages to elevate Justin Hawkins’ vocals to new heights of ridiculousness.
5. DJ Clive$ter - To Lose My Touch [MP3]
- Genesis - Invisible Touch
- White Lies - To Lose My Life
While I don’t despise Genesis with the same passion as Dire Straits (don’t get me started), it takes a very special track to make them listenable. This is the second time this year Clive$ter has broken through my prejudice with a killer combination. Paired up with the danceable punk of White Lies, Invisible Touch becomes a fresh and likeable track, worthy of any indie disco.
6. Mighty Mike - Fall Out Gloria [MP3]
- Gloria Gaynor - I Will Survive
- Fall Out Boy - This Ain’t a Scene (It’s an Arms Race)
Maybe my camp side is showing here, but for me Fall Out Boy have rarely sounded better than they do here, jiving along to Gloria Gaynor’s disco anthem. It shouldn’t work - it really shouldn’t - but it’s just faahbulous.
7. CjR - Numb’s Diner [HTTP]
- Linkin Park - Numb
- Suzanne Vega - Tom’s Diner
Tom’s Diner is embedded deep in the heart of the bootleg scene, but for all the times it’s been used in the past, it still sounds fresh and new in CjR’s capable hands.
8. Norwegian Recycling - Viva La Viral [MP3]
- Coldplay - Viva La Vida
- The Killers - When You Were Young
- Kelly Clarkson - Because of You
- Bon Jovi - Livin’ on a Prayer
- Empire of the Sun - Walking on a Dream
- Muse - Starlight
- Helloogoodbye - All of Your Love
Proving that Viva La Vida is the gift that keeps on giving, Norwegian Recycling’s latest audio collage follows in the footsteps of other excellent takes on the track from the likes of DJ Earworm and Divide & Kreate. For my money, this may be the best version yet, as it successfully flips the almost Christmassy feel of the Coldplay track for a chilled summer groove.
9. G3RSt - Surfbusters [MP3]
- Ray Parker Jr. - Ghostbusters
- The Tornadoes - Bustin’ Surfboards
With this gloriously eclectic offering, G3RSt once again proves himself to be a master of the unexpected mash. Who else would think to bring together the ’80s movie theme with a ’60s surfpop track?
10. Winkar Lopez - Just Silence Gone [HTTP]
- Delerium - Silence
- TI ft. Justin Timberlake - Dead and Gone
- Chris Willis - Just a Little More Love
I’ve got a lot of time for Sarah McLachlan, and always make sure I check any mashups she features on. Slipped into this urban setting, McLachlan’s Silence vocal is given a captivating new spin.
