RE:boots January - the best mashups of 2009

Reboots January

Last year’s monthly round-up of The Reborn Identity’s favourite mashups proved a popular part of the site, so it’s back for more action in 2009. Each month this year, RE:boots will bring you some of the best mashups from across the Net, as picked by The Reborn Identity. Let’s get started then with some of January’s finest boots.

1. Ben Double M - Easy - [MP3]
2= Bobby Martini - Careless Duffy - [MP3]
2= LeeDM101 - Careless Steps - [DivShare]
3. Norwegian Recycling - Recychedelic - [DivShare]
4. DJ Gauffie - Living On Mercy - [MediaFire]
5. DJ Clive$ter - Hotel California Must Go On - [MP3]
6. LeeDM101 - A Bad Kiss In Silence - [MediaFire]
7. Mighty Mike - Mercy For Roxanne - [MP3]
8. ToToM - Mercury In A Bottle - [MP3]
9. Sugamotor - Papa Was In Chicago - [MP3]
10. ComaR - Suprise Paper Planes - [MP3]

1. Ben Double M - Easy - [MP3]
~ The Commodores - Easy
~ Danny Clark & Jay Benham - Attracted to You
Ben Double M is a genius at matching vocals up with house and trance tracks to create some of the best dancefloor mashups around. This house take on The Commodore’s Easy is one of his best, and it’s an excellent way to kick off the year.

2= Bobby Martini - Careless Duffy - [MP3]
2= LeeDM101 - Careless Steps - [DivShare]
~ George Michael - Careless Whisper
~ Duffy - Stepping Stone
It’s not uncommon for two mashup producers to come up with same combination of songs. It’s pretty rare for two near identical songs to be released on exactly the same day though. That’s exactly what happened when Bobby Martini and LeeDM101 both unveiled their George Michael/Duffy mashups in January. It’s easy to see why both producers chose these tracks though, as they’re a perfect match.

3. Norwegian Recycling - Recychedelic - [DivShare]
~ 1200 Micrograms, 3 Doors Down, Cher, Madonna, Michael Jackson, Britney Spears, Daft Punk, Kent, The Blues Brothers, Sisqo, Shakira, Jay-Z & Linkin Park, Robert Miles, Craig David, Fergie
There are plenty of mashup producers around who can competently blend a couple of tracks to create a good mashup. There are few though who can take 15 tracks and weave them together into a coherent and impressive whole. Norwegian Recycling is one of the best, and this latest masterpiece makes him a serious contender for DJ Earworm’s crown.

4. DJ Gauffie - Living On Mercy - [MediaFire]
~ Trans-X - Living on Video
~ Duffy - Mercy

We’re up the Duff’ again with this superb dancefloor number from DJ Gauffie. The sixties feel of Mercy is switched for the cool ’80s vibe of Trans-X’s Living on Video. The Welsh whinger never sounded so danceable.

5. DJ Clive$ter - Hotel California Must Go On - [MP3]
~ The Eagles - Hotel California
~ Queen - The Show Must Go On
If Andrew Lloyd-Webber produced mashups, I’d like to think they’d by dramatic, bombastic affairs like this sterling pairing from DJ Clive$ter, which takes the theatrical seriousness of Hotel California to new, ever more grandioise levels.

6. LeeDM101 - A Bad Kiss In Silence - [MediaFire]
~ Britney Spears - And Then We Kiss (Junkie XL Mix)
~ Depeche Mode - Enjoy The Silence
~ Bon Jovi - You Give Love A Bad Name

It’s quite an achievement to build a track from a Britney mix (thankfully vocal free) and a slice of big-haired Bon Jovi, yet come up with something delicate, refined and completely cheese-free. That’s exactly what LeeDM101 has achieved with this exceptionally well executed track, which also features some superb vocoder work.

7. Mighty Mike - Mercy For Roxanne - [MP3]
~ The Police - Roxanne
~ Duffy - Mercy
Now I’ve never been terribly fond of The Police, and Roxanne in particular really grates, but I can’t deny that Duffy’s Mercy seems really at home in that red light district. Mercy for Roxanne lends the Duffy track a much seedier edge - “my morals got me on my knees”… I bet they have. This is the last Duffy track in the round-up, I promise.

8. ToToM - Mercury In A Bottle - [MP3]
~ Bloc Party - Mercury
~ The Police - Message in a Bottle

For someone who doesn’t especially like The Police, I certainly seem to recommend a lot of Sting-flavoured tracks. They mash well though, as ToToM proves yet again with this dark, upbeat number. This is the second time (to my knowledge, at least) Message in a Bottle has been successfully fused with Bloc Party in fact, the first being Hi-Brid’s Message Influx from February last year.

9. Sugamotor - Papa Was In Chicago - [MP3]
~ Groove Armada - Chicago
~ The Temptations - Papa Was A Rolling Stone
The 50th anniversary of Motown, celebrated this January, rolled by without much fanfare in the mashup world. Every month is a Motown celebration in bootleg land though, and Sugamotor’s effortless fusion of The Temptations and Groove Armada makes for a beautifully understated tribute.

10. ComaR - Surprise Paper Planes - [MP3]
~ Radiohead - No Surprises
~ M.I.A. - Paper Planes

The brashness of M.I.A.’s Paper Planes has been softened down to almost dreamy levels by ComaR in this surprisingly apt pairing with Radiohead’s lullaby, No Surprises.

    As compilers of a mashup Top 10 ourselves, we are LOVING your monthly list, and glad you are keeping it up. It’s fun to see what we might have missed ourselves. I just wish that you had direct links to the MP3s… digging through some people’s web sites can prove daunting sometimes… for instance, I can’t find LeeDM101’s “Careless Step” on his site!

  2. Gavin Says:

    You guys are the masters of the mashup Top 10 and show the rest of us how it’s done. I’ve been meaning to add direct links for a while now, so I’ll definitely put that into action now. In the meantime, LeeDM101’s “Careless Steps” can be had here: http://www.divshare.com/download/6325383-44a

    Cheers

    Direct links to MP3s where available (and the relevant download sites when they’re not) have now been added to help make it a little easier to get hold of all these tracks. I’ll carry this on in future RE:boots too.

    Cheers
