8. DJ Moule - Fa Fa Fa Good
9. DJ Morgoth - Ace of Spades Feels Good
10. Mash2Mix - Sleeping Night
Keep reading after the break.
1. MadMixMustang - Take it Easy on Me
~ A-ha - Take On Me
~ The Commodores - Easy
A-ha’s Take On Me has been a staple of the school disco for 20 years, but it’s hardly a final dance smoocher. Well it is now, thanks to this inspired pairing by MadMixMustang. Who’d have thought such a high energy pop belter would make such an effective ballad?
2. DJ Zebra - Roxanne Should Be Dancing
~ The Police - Roxanne
~ The Bee Gees - You Should Be Dancing
The Police have been all over the mashup scene this month - thankfully, we’re talking the Sting variety here - and there are a good three or four superb tracks I could have picked out for this roundup. Maybe it’s the closet disco dancer in me jiving its way out, but it’s this Bee Gees-fuelled version which really gets me going. For all its retro elements, it sounds totally fresh for the dancefloor.
3. G3RSt - Bloom to Me
~ Nirvana - In Bloom
~ Koop - Come To Me
G3RSt is carving out a niche for himself as the king of the unexpected mashup. Some of his latest tracks have seen him pairing up modern vocals with marching bands and ’50s rock and roll classics. Bloom To Me paints a cheery smile on Nirvana’s In Bloom with the help of Swedish electronic/jazz/pop band Koop.
4. Mighty Mike - Neverending
~ Rick Astley - Never Gonna Give You Up
~ Mika - Happy Ending
The bizarre rick-rolling craze which has swept the Internet has fuelled new enthusiasm in the mashup world for Stock, Aitken Waterman’s favoured son, Rick Astley. Like Take It Easy On Me, Mighty Mike’s Neverending recasts an ’80s pop classic as a sweeping ballad via Mika’s Happy Ending.
5. Bobby Martini - There’s No Hiding Place
~ Genesis - Man on the Corner
~ Fragma - Toca’s Miracle 08
I feel a little dirty at recommending a Genesis mashup, but it says something for how good this track is that even a generous helping of Phil Collins isn’t enough to put me off. Listen without prejudice and you’ll find this a cracking, fresh dance track.
6. DJ Earworm - Reckoner Lockdown
~ Radiohead - Reckoner
~ Kanye West - Love Lockdown
Popular as he is, Kanye doesn’t generally make the type of music I like to listen to, and it’s probably more than a decade since Radiohead disappeared up their own arses and stopped making music I enjoyed. Strangely though, when you stick the latest tracks from both artists together something very special happens…
7. KRO - Delta Airlines
~ Air - La Voyage de Penelope
~ Delta Goodrem - Believe Again
Some mashups have pretty terrible titles, let’s face it, but a few buck the trend and offer listeners something a little smarter to chuckle over. It’s not just the title to KRO’s latest number that gets the thumbs up from me, but the simply perfect way Delta Goodrem’s vocals glide over the wonderfully atmospheric Air backing.
8. DJ Moule - Fa Fa Fa Good
~ Datarock - Fa Fa Fa
~ James Brown - I Feel Good
~ The Beatles - Taxman
The Norweigan electro-rock outift Datarock is a gem of a band, and their unusual brand of pop deserves a much bigger audience. Of all their tracks, the one most crying out for the mashup treatment is the stomping Fa Fa Fa. DJ Moule has done a sterling job, cranking up the funk with the soulmeister James Brown.
9. DJ Morgoth - Ace of Spades Feels Good
~ Motörhead - Ace of Spades
~ Gorillaz - Feel Good Inc
I daresay we’ll hear a lot more mashup of the Motörhead classic in the months ahead, but producers will need to work hard to top this perfect pairing from DJ Morgoth, which adds a fresh new vibe to the rock classic.
10. Mash2Mix - Sleeping Night
~ Tasmin Archer - Sleeping Satellite
~ Corona - The Rhythm of the Night
~ TCS Project - Nobody Like You
The early 90s saw a flurry of talented female vocalists hitting the heights of the UK charts - Tasmin Archer, Beverley Craven and Dina Carroll to name but three. Despite great early success, the record industry wasn’t kind to these artists, and they quickly slipped back into relative obscurity. The revival starts here though, with Mash2Mix’s homage to Tasmin Archer’s best known track, Sleeping Satellite.
