This collection of tracks is dedicated to the highs and lows of the British summer - from dodging rainstorms (Momma’s Ducks) to fending off seagulls in a sleepy resort town (Victoria’s Tender Secret).

1. Momma’s Ducks - Lemon Jelly vs Chromeo
Nice Weather for Ducks by British electro duo Lemon Jelly is a burst of sunshine between the showers, which encapsulates the British summer to a tee (or a cream tea, if you prefer). Momma’s Ducks pairs this jaunty track with the vocals from Momma’s Boys from another electro duo - the Canadian vocoder-lovers Chromeo.

2. Summer in Fleetwood - Fleetwood Mac vs Ace of Base
Summer in Fleetwood blends Fleetwood Mac’s Everywhere (from the album, Tango in the Night) with the vocals from the Ace of Base version of Cruel Summer. I remember Fleetwood Mac’s Tango in the Night album being played as we drove down to our family holidays in the late ’80s, so it always reminds me of summer. For those who don’t know, Fleetwood is also a quiet British seaside town that’s just up the coast from Blackpool.

3. Indian Summer - Suede vs Dennis Edwards & Siedah Garrett
The title of Indian Summer is a bit of a fudge for the sake this EP but the track does have a certain baking hot October feel to it. The backing comes from a track called Indian Strings from the latter days of the ertswhile Britpoppers Suede (or The London Suede, if you’re in the US). The vocals are from Don’t Look Any Further by Temptations singer Dennis Edwards and Siedah Garrett.

4. Victoria’s Tender Secret - Blur vs Quiet Village
Probably the most summery of all the tracks on the EP, Victoria’s Tender Secret is a slow and sleepy closer that lazily paddles along the shore as the seagulls swoop above. The track uses the vocals from Blur’s Tender alongside the atmospheric Victoria’s Secret from the wonderfully cinematic Quiet Village album Silent Movie.

Top work Gavin! Lovin’ this EP. All are top tracks but extra kudos for using Suede. I’m a massive fan, having seen them several times, and of course, the final farewell gig in Shepherd’s Bush.

Victoria’s Tender Secret is particularly evoking of a sleep Summer’s Day. Beautiful mash, and perfect for laying back in a hammock, with an ice cold lemonade on the go, snoozing in the shade.

    Brilliant all round

    Cheers,
    Andy

    Cheers, Andy!

I couldn’t put together a British summer collection and miss out on a few Britpop notables. I was quite the Suede fan myself back in the day and had the pleasure of seeing them live a couple of times. It would be great to put together a mashup with one of their earlier tracks sometime, so that’s another one for the lengthy to do list.

Glad you liked the Blur track too - the gently lapping vibe of the Quiet Village track was just crying out for a mashup, and Tender fitted in beautifully.

    Cheers
    Gav

    Gavin,

This is an ace summer compilation! Been listening to your stuff more and more.

BTW, Fleetwood Summer is up on Mashstix and can’t wait for more of your submissions.

  5. Gavin Says:

    Thanks, Paul

Glad you like the compilation. Ironically, the British summer has been one long downpour since I released this - it’s not my fault, honest!

I’ve got plenty more tracks on the way, so I’ll have more for you soon.

    Cheers
    Gavin
