There are better ways of getting from A to B than on the bandwagon, and as a rule I prefer to take the road less travelled. It doesn’t hurt to swim with the flow every once in a while, and I’ve certainly lined up with all the other little fishes on this one by producing a mashup of the already overused Katy Perry track, I Kissed A Girl. I’ve raided the Motown closet again for mashup material, pairing up the locum lady lover with the backing from the original 1964 Gloria Jones version of Tainted Love.
I wasn’t going to release this, as there are already more than enough bootlegs of the Katy Perry track out there, but when AudioPorn Central announced plans to put together a comprehensive We All Kissed A Girl mashup compilation I caved in and threw my hat in the ring.
After a long string of mashups I thought it was about time I flexed my remixing muscles. The latest track to receive the remix treatment is another number from Glen Phillips - a singer-songwriter very close to my heart. Solar Flare, from Glen’s recent Secrets of the New Explorers EP, is probably the most joyful song ever written about being stripped down to your atoms.
David Lynch is best known as the master of weird Americana, but he’s also directed some of the most moving films of the last 30 years, namely The Elephant Man and The Straight Story. The latter’s beauty is greatly enriched by Angelo Badalamenti’s sumptuous soundtrack, and it’s worth watching the film for the track Laurens Walking alone.
Now I know I’ve already used Laurens Walking in a mashup once (last year’s Shut Up and Walk), but I felt I had yet to do full justice to the beauty of the track. I’ve hopefully put that right now by pairing it up with Kirsty Hawkshaw’s dreamy vocals from Opus III’s early ’90s dance version of It’s a Fine Day.
Colatron was looking for someone to put together a video for his awesome mashup Twin Hearts (Kylie Minogue vs Angelo Badalamenti). How could I refuse the challenge, being the David Lynch geek that I am? This was an absolute joy to put together, so I hope you like it. Check out the Colatron website for the original audio track.
No sooner had I posted the British Summertime EP online than Chromeo unveiled their stunning video for Momma’s Boy. It was too good an opportunity to pass up, especially as its simple black and white look provided a perfect counterpoint to the psychedelic visual feast of Lemon Jelly’s Nice Weather for Ducks visuals, so here’s my video for Momma’s Ducks, complete with a dash of Hitchcock’s Psycho.

Each time I put together an installment of my favourite mashups of 2008 it seems to get a little harder to pick out the final 10. This month I could easily put together 20 or 30 tracks I would have no qualms in recommending to the world. That would be cheating though, so after many revisions, here are my picks for July…
To coincide with the release of the British Summertime EP I’ve put together a video for the poppiest track, Summer in Fleetwood (Fleetwood Mac vs Ace of Base). Enjoy.

This collection of tracks is dedicated to the highs and lows of the British summer - from dodging rainstorms (Momma’s Ducks) to fending off seagulls in a sleepy resort town (Victoria’s Tender Secret).
